The Art of Positive Perception

The other day I was talking with my son, who is currently 6 years old.  We were discussing what my job was and other jobs that I had in the past.  One of which was where I met my wife and subsequently his mother.

I got to thinking about how life is so precious and how every choice we make really does impact the next and in the end all of our choices add up to what we have and don’t have in our lives.

So as I was explaining to my son how I came to meet his mother through work. Then the thought came to me that he would not be here if not for a series of choices that I had made very early in my life.

In actuality our conversation started with the fact that I did not get a job that I really wanted and how it turned out to be a great thing because he is now a part of my life.  If I had taken that job, it would have been extremely unlikely that I would have met his mother.

On a business note the other day, one of my ‘systems’ shut down. I had to make some changes in my routine and be creative in getting my ‘system’ back running.  What I had found was something that should have been part of my ‘system’ all along.

Unfortunately, we often get upset by things that we perceive as bad.  What we should be working on is how to look at every situation and perceive the good.  I realize that this is not always the easiest thing to do, especially when it comes to immediate financial loss.

However, the more time we can spend thinking of the positive that can come from every situation the better our attitude and outlook will be.  I have a few things that I do each day to help keep positive perception at the top of the list.

First thing I do each morning is make a plan for the day; actually I review and adjust the weekly plan that I have made on Sunday night.  At the top of this list is the number one goal of everyday – HAVE FUN!  This may sound crazy but seriously to help stay positive I have to have fun most of the time.  I love to interact with people; especially those who like to have fun and stay positive as well, so I try to surround myself with positive people.  When I am in the presence of negative people or conversation I work to get out of that situation.

The other thing I do everyday is review my day at the end of it, before I go to bed and ask myself two questions.  What did I do well today?  And what can I do tomorrow to be better than I was today?

If we simply take the time to inventory our work and actions everyday we can work on this positive perception thing.   Don’t expect to be perfect, nobody ever was and nobody ever will be.  But you can strive to be the best you can be in every situation and catch yourself when being negative and limit the interaction.  As adults we find if very hard to check out behavior and to limit the emotional side of interaction but we must work to do our best.
