Keys to Successful Internet Marketing

A majority of my SEM customers ask the identical questions: I have a great site, why am I not getting any traffic? My keywords are obvious, why do not come up when they get searched? My cometitor has a horrible site, why does he come up before me? Here are the answers to all of these questions.

How come some sites outrank other sites?

Google uses a wide range of metrics to figure out exactly where your site should rank compare to your competitors. Many factors are used including PR, links, link quality and your overall theme. Google considers all of these metrics and gives your site a score that is used to rank your site. A website that is optimized for only some of these factors will not be enough to rank high for cometitive terms.

Search Terms

Often I get approached by a Search Engine Marketing client that sells watches, for example. The client was determined to get his site at the top of Google for the keyword "watches". It is always difficult to explain to the client that their site is simply not going to be #1 for this keyword. The cost to rank high for the keyword "watches" with a new site is insane.

Of course, the better way to increase traffic is to optimize for keywords that are much more specific. Perhaps targeting a specific manufacturer or even model number is a much better plan. All of the traffic from these keywords would also help with his quest to be ranked #1 for "watches". The main change is he could expect traffic quickly while we work towards the ultimate goal.

Here's the last thing on keyword selection. Always make sure that the keywords you are targeting actually receive traffic! Make sure you do the research and don't assume the keywords you think of are the keywords the customer is searching for. It is not uncommon to find that the main keywords have received little or no traffic over the previous month on Google. If no one is searching for your keyword, being number 1 is pointless.



Several clients started out with hatred for all things Internet. They say things like, well I can take an ad out in the paper or I'm going to go door to door. Some people even believed that the majority of people find local businesses in the phone book. They still believe that when a guy buys a watch he fires up the 2000 page book and finds a jewelry store. The best customer is the world is a customer that knows exactly what he/she wants. When you go to the grocery store to buy a can of soup, you ARE going to buy a can of soup. The same principles apply to Internet Marketing. When a customer enters an extremely specific keyword, he already knows what he is going to buy. If you have the product, he wants to buy it from you! This man is not shopping for a "watch" he is shopping for SPC011.

To get the most out of your Internet Marketing campaigns, follow the above advice and you are already in front of websites out there.
