One of the most important decisions you'll make for your child will be its name. You've got the extraordinary opportunity to decide what a person is going to be identified as for their whole life, a name certainly doesn't define who a person is or what they may become, but it undoubtedly will effect them however slight at some point in their future.
Yes, it's a serious responsibility and your baby boys name shouldn't be considered lightly (or confirmed after a confrontation with your mother in law), but remember it's also a lot of fun too! This is your chance to bestow upon a special person the name that you've always liked, or one you've found that has that certain ring to it. Consider these tips when choosing a name to ensure smooth sailing for the years to come.
Consider the Surname:
The babies surname and how it matches with the first name is vital. Unless you want your sons name to be the topic of conversation around the water cooler it’s a good idea to really think about this one.
Don't Forget the Middle Name:
Is your child going to have a middle name? Or two? Thank goodness for middle names, if you’re tempted to be a bit creative when choosing names but your other half doesn’t quite agree, then it can easily be settled by being a middle name. However many people feel committed to a middle name already, the fathers name, or one of the Grandparents names are quite usual. So if you already know what the middle name is going to be take this into consideration. You might want to avoid first names and middle names that rhyme…just a suggestion.
Does it Rhyme with Something Less Than Appealing?:
Bullying is bound to happen, especially if you’re a boy. There’s just something about the male brain which just itches to be aggressive and to take things out on their peers. You can of course help my not giving young and creative minds something easy to twist into the new playground song. This is where the first and last name combination is imperative. Even grown men are especially good at recognising a potential bully magnet, so run it by some friends and family and ask them to do their best.
Will It Be Shortened To A Nick Name?:
That is there nick name going to be? Can the name be shortened? Can you handle it when your Mitchell becomes Mitch? Do you like the name Joe instead of Joseph? Make sure you like the shortened version before you commit. Because, chances are, that’s what your boy will be called throughout his entire life or at least until he’s 80 years old and it becomes more appropriate to use the long version.
Pronunciation:
Is it relatively easy to pronounce? There are some people in life that have very unique and beautiful names that can only ever be pronounced by people that speak French.
Spelling:
Is it relatively easy to spell? You might think it great that your sons name has a silent “j”, but he’ll never get all of those hours back that he spent spelling out his email address to people.
All things in consideration, you’ll know the right name when you find it. It will just feel right. Generally, stick to whatever feels right to you and your spouse because this is your special little man. And good luck for the future!
