Grace Enderlein is a freelance writer and editor. Soroptimist.org has a Best for Women Blog which gives women a platform for sharing advice on managing the stresses in their work and families. Sroptimist International women’s organization is an organization that works to improve the lives of women and allows women to share thoughts on how to handle stress in their lives.
Women are particularly burdened with stress because we tend to take everything on ourselves; children, husbands, work, volunteering in our community, and more. The obligations seem to be never ending. The good news is, this is what makes women so special – our nurturing nature that makes us put others first. The bad news is that we always put ourselves last.
Another characteristic that makes us exceptional is our ability and need to communicate. We call and visit to talk and listen. We write in our journals, write letters and email. Blogs for women are of particular help, because countless other women are right at our fingertips. It is a wonderful platform to be heard, to listen, and to give and get advice. Reaching out helps us to be our best selves, and helps us deal with our own issues.
What are some things that we learn about coping with our stress from blogs for women? We hear it over and over again from women with experience and the experts – take time for you, and this will help keep anxiety levels low. Unfortunately, it is not only our stress and emotional levels being affected, it is our physical health. Our foundation is self love and self care. When we get caught up in everything else, we forget about ourselves. Taking care of you should be on our “to-do” lists as an obligation.
What kinds of things can women do to combat stress? Not everyone has the time or the means to take a vacation or go to a spa, so it can be simple, everyday things that we can fit into our real-life schedules. If you only have a minute, some deep breathing, stretching, or even meditation and prayer can help calm your nerves. Walking and exercise are excellent ways to feel renewed and clear your mind. You can call a friend, take a bath, or read a wonderful book or a lighthearted magazine.
Maybe you have an interest in a subject, and you can take a class to further your knowledge in it. It is ok if it is something frivolous or impractical that does not have anything to do with your profession or every day life; it is something for you to enjoy. Don’t forget that it is ok to say no to volunteer work if you are overextended. Spending fun time with your children and spouse is a great stress reliever. Play a game, bake some cookies, and no homework and no TV! Some quiet bonding is beneficial for everyone involved. Most importantly, appreciate yourself, don’t dwell on the bad, and be your own best friend. After all, everyone else is counting on you, so you need to be at your best.
