Every year, a significant amount of fire incidents happen in the United Kingdom and a significant amount of deaths and injuries also occur during these fires. Having a detailed record of these facts and figures can be of great help in creating methods and devices to further lessen such unpleasant incidents. Also, having a detailed record may help concerned authorities in pinpointing the most common causes and therefore having the opportunity to act on it.
According to the Fire Statistics, UK, there were a total of 804,100 fire incidents that were responded to by the local authority fire and rescue services. Of these fire incidents, there are at least 443 fire related deaths that occurred. The most common area of fire incidents, as said in the report occurred in dwelling places. The fatality rates were highest for people aged 80 and above. Of these fire incidents, more or less 31,000 happened in buildings and 61% of it was accidental. Of the total casualties that were recording during the year, 36 people died in fires that happened inside buildings.
The records for the year 2007 were significantly lower than those of the previous year. When comparison is made, it has been observed that the total number of fire incidents for the year 2007 is 8 per cent lower than the year 2006. Of these statistics, it can also be learned that the total casualties lessened 10 percent from the year 2006 to 2007. These records may simply suggest that a lot more fire preventive measures have been made all throughout building establishments to further protect their premises from fire incidents. Indeed, having these measures did a great help in reducing the fire incidents in the country.
A fire preventive measure that was authorized by the Fire and Safety Order of 2005 and was taken into effect in October 2006, is conducting a fire risk assessment in buildings which have five or more occupants. The fire risk assessment greatly helped in determining the different fire hazards in building establishments, as well proposing methods in order to lessen the likelihood of fire. Moreover, since the fire risk assessment not only happens once for building establishments, business owners gain the responsibility of re-assessing their premises once the need arises. Having such an assessment in buildings in turn made them a much safer environment for their occupants.
In addition to the requirements of the fire risk assessment, a much more detailed advice must also be sought out in the proper implementation of fire risk management plans. Once the fire risk assessment is finished, gaining more practical advice from the local fire and rescue authority will be of great help in the future. Moreover, it is also advisable if business owners employ a fire safety specialist to help in managing fire preventive measures in your work place. Having such preventive measures being installed or created in your buildings premises will definitely help you in lessening the statistics of fire incidents. As long as local regulations and measures are being met, building establishments have less likelihood of belonging to the significant number of fire incidents.
