It is not new thing to find high profile gardeners, in the midst of a 'grow your own' revolution, that is currently sweeping the earth.
Michele Obama has been well photographed with young students, as she hauled up part of the White House lawns, in order to grow fresh veggies. With her discussions about the necessity of coping with obesity, plus her vegetable garden, Ms Obama has highlighted the value of making fresh fruits and vegetables accessible, particularly to people in poor, underserved neighbourhoods.
Michele Obama seems to applaud the effort for Fresh Farm Markets to be permitted an open-air farmers' market every Thursday on a location close to the White House.
The aim of Fresh Farm Markets is to see "That local and fresh produce is available to all people, regardless of income and/or financial stability".
One of the city bus lines would have to be changed by city officials, in order to accommodate the market, according to the permit application. The plans submitted to the city reveal that farmers would sell their goods under cover of twelve tents, which would be located along Vermont Avenue.
However, Michele Obama is merely following in the footsteps of a high profile gardener across the ocean. In 1940 Queen Elizabeth II, aged 14 years, was photographed in gardening gear with her sister, when the girls were known as the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. The two girls were also photographed toiling in the gardens of Windsor Castle garden in 1943 during the British government’s World War II ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign.
Seventy years later Queen Elizabeth has renewed the traditional veggie patch, putting aside a team of gardeners to organically plant leeks, beans, tomatoes, lettuce, potatoes and onions in the 16-hectare Buckingham Palace royal gardens. The garden includes such varieties as Golden Queen and White Queen tomatoes, Royal Red and Blue Queen French Beans and Northern Queen lettuces.
These high profile gardeners are eager to see a lot more people encouraged to participate in the 'grow your own food' revolution, as vegetables are planted on roofs, in alleys and any piece of spare ground people can get their hands on.
