Help the Aged has announced details of a new review that will be launched in the run up to the fourth National Falls Awareness Day (NFAD), which will take place on 24th June 2008.

The review, Fall Stop, explains the findings of the Falls Prevention in Practice review that was commissioned by Help the Aged. This review was commissioned with the intention of raising awareness of falls risk and prevention in older people. It was carried out by a top research team from Southampton University and London’s South Bank University, and was based on a number of recommendations made by the Prevention of Falls Network Europe.

Thanks to the research carried out by these universities, Fall Stop is packed with practical help and guidance to prevent falls. It is aimed at practitioners who work with old people, including falls coordinators, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, GPs, and care home and day centre managers.

Help the Aged’s Head of Healthy Ageing Pamela Holmes said that the review was vital for those who work with elderly people, as well as important to Help the Aged’s own ongoing programme of fall prevention. She said: 'We are launching this review in the lead up to activities for National Falls Awareness Day so that practitioners can have cutting-edge and widely sourced information at their fingertips to support their ongoing falls prevention work.”

Ms Holmes said that the timing of this review was to raise awareness of National Falls Awareness Day, as well as to inspire activities that can be held to celebrate the event. She said: “Fall Stop provides ideas for improving communication, including providing information in a range of formats, being culturally sensitive and including individual and group activities. All of this would be useful to practitioners looking to use the opportunity of National Falls Awareness Day to focus their falls prevention activities.”

The aim of National Falls Awareness Day is to show older people and their friends and families, as well as health professionals and policy makers, the risk of falling as our bodies age. As there will be more pensioners than children in the UK in the next two years, issues like this that affect our ageing population are more important than ever.

There are expected to be thousands of fall awareness events taking place across the UK for National Falls Awareness Day 2008. These will include sloppy slipper swaps, dance classes and blood-pressure checks.

In addition to National Fall Awareness Day, Help the Aged is also continuing to push forward its campaign to improve the UK’s pavements in order to help elderly people be as active as possible. In order to do this, the charity is encouraging members of the general public to report any bad paving to their local council immediately.
