People with Disabilities - Steps to Living Independently

The quest for independence has been seen in all people and in all races for many years. People are prepared to die for their independence. Bloody wars are fought for freedom from suppression by religious or race groups. The one thing we all value the most is our freedom and independence. For a disabled person, this is just as true if not more. To regain self-worth and confidence the disabled person needs to be as independent as his or her disability will allow.

With all the aids and assistive items available to help disabled people in their need to be independent it has become relatively easy to live alone or to at least be able to do most things for themselves.

From government to volunteers, they are doing what they can to make life easier for the disabled person.

Government Assistance

There are various disability grants available for personal as well as business use. Take the time to apply for as many as you feel you qualify for. These grants can assist with medical bills, assistive items such as wheel chairs, adapted computers for the blind and housing adaptations.

The housing adaptation grant can be used to make changes to the house of the disabled person to make it more wheel chair friendly or even to add ground floor facilities for immobile people. You will, however, have to wait for the grant to be approved before you can start any changes to the home. Grants won’t be paid for any adaptations made before approval. You will also have to pass the means test which will look at your household income to establish if you qualify for this grant.

It can be a time consuming task to find the available and suitable grants for your situation, but it might just make your life a whole lot easier.

Volunteers

It would be beneficial to find out what volunteer services are available in your area. Volunteers will assist in many areas to make life easier for the disabled. Transport services provided by volunteers are one of the most valuable and needed services. The disabled person will have the means to get to hospitals, doctors and therapist for treatment and therapy. The volunteers will also assist with shopping, the paying of bills or library visits.

Volunteers at sporting activities for disabled people will assist the person with transport to the venue and with any other help the person will need at the venue.

Volunteers also help out at home with meals and any other tasks the disabled person might need done.
