The Drunk Driving Issue: No Simple Solution

Drunk driving incidences have become common occurrences in society today.  It has come to the point where being arrested for a DUI is viewed as "no big deal".  Tabloids poke fun at celebrities who are arrested for drunk driving.  There doesn't seem to be enough public service announcements educating people about the consequences of a DUI.  Car accidents and fatalities due to drivers under the alcohol are still on the rise.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an alcohol-related traffic fatality happens every 40 minutes.  So, what will it take for people to realize that drinking and driving is a serious social issue?  What can be done to prevent drunk driving?

Like most issues in our society today, there is no simple, clear-cut solution to the drunk driving issue.  There are many initiatives that have been implemented in recent years including:

  • Mandatory ignition interlock devices installed in DUI repeat offenders' vehicles.  Some car companies like Saab, Nissan, Toyota, and other car manufacturers are already developing new interlock technology to be offered as optional equipment.  Policymakers are even pushing to make this interlock technology mandatory for every vehicle.
  • Mandatory alcohol server training programs for restaurant and bar employees.
  • Designated driver programs - These programs are typically designed to promote the idea of designating a sober driver whose responsibility is to make sure people get home safely.  Other programs provide drivers who can pick you up and take you home, similar to a taxi service.
  • Sobriety checkpoints in designated areas during times when drunk driving is most likely to occur (on weekends and special events).

A combination of all these initiatives could be the key to reducing DUI incidences, but it's obvious given current statistics that much more action is needed.  Whether it comes from the government, individual citizens, or non-profit programs, we need more people to commit to helping the cause.
