North American Outlets features walk through medal detectors for security as well as medal detectors for treasure hunting and pleasure.
The era preceeding 911 was a simpler time in the United States as well as the remainder of the world. This time frame is sort of a mile marker in public security. It invokes memories of horrific events that took the lives of many innocent human beings. This date is etched into our memories but it is not necessarily the only day in history that caused public security to become tightened. It stands as a constant reminder of how relaxed security and an live and let live state of mind can lead to catastrophic injury and loss of life. Most of us remember that times were much simpler just a few short years ago regarding security in public places.
The airlines in particular were hit hardest by terrorist activity and the 911 tragedy. The use of medal detectors was non existent on my first commercial airline flight. As a matter of fact, if I recall correctly, my carry-on bag may or may not even have been searched for contraband. This is back in the day when a passenger in your row may have even been inclined to light up a smoke or two during the flight... with his cigarette lighter nonetheless. The pat-down has become the norm, as a matter of fact, I wouldn't feel nearly as safe boarding a commercial airline flight without one. Other forms of public transportation have seen significant changes in pre-boarding and baggage checks as well. How about major sporting events? Not long ago, simply walking through a turnstyle with a ticket in hand was sufficient to enter a stadium or sports arena. Now we find ourselves slowly passing through a walk-through medal detector or other similar safety screening. High school, college, semi-pro, or professional games are no longer sacred or exempt from security procedures. Been to a musical show or rock concert lately? You'll find yourself in full pat-down and probably even being asked to remove your hat as well. In some locations we're even seeing shoe removal and portable medal detectors used for many events. Then there are the schools, with doors locked down almost on the level of a minimum security prison. Security cameras and alarms line the halls of schools at the taxpayers expense, of course. Unfortunately, the schools have become havens for security issues. Some gum in your hair or an unsightly pimple were big problems for students at one time, now the fear of assault rifles and knoves on campus or maybe an improvised explosive device now plague the minds of school age children at an age when more pleasant thoughts should occupy their time.
It seems no matter where we choose to go, security has been heightened and obviously won't be returning to pre 911 levels ever again. Times change and so do people. Desensitivity to violence from an over-abundance of brutal video on television and the internet may be one root cause. The other reason is the constant growth of terrorism and those who capitalize on fear by promoting senseless acts on the innocent public. The unfortunate reality is that the world is changing and public safety requires increased security no matter where you choose to reside.
