Brainwave entrainment utilizes binaural frequency harmonics to achieve altered states of consciousness quickly and easily in the human mind. Fundamentally this technology works through two different oscillating frequencies interacting to produce a third frequency known as the binaural beat. The resulting binaural beat is a frequency that is too low for human ears to perceive but that the brain nonetheless will respond to. For example, if two frequencies 400 Hz and 410 Hz are played through stereo headphones to the right and left ears respectively, then a binaural beat of 10 Hz will be perceived within the brain.

The binaural beat can be produced to match any state of consciousness whether it be relaxation, meditation, sleep or even states that allow for telepathy, ESP, remote viewing, past life regression and manifestation. The process of the human mind producing brainwaves matching the binaural beat is known as the frequency following effect and this is how auditory, or binaural beats can "entrain the brain". EEG studies show that the period of the brain's response corresponds fundamentally to the frequency of the audio stimulus.

Studies conducted by Sidney A. Schneider have shown that over 90% of 2,500 subjects exposed to auditory stimulii experienced altered states of consciousness (such as light to deep hypnotic trances). Schneider's research concluded that each individual became entrained at a specific frequency allowing them to enter a trance state through listening to audio stimulation or live hypnotic induction.

Through introducing the brain to binaural frequency harmonics via audio technology one can effortlessly induce profoundly powerful states of deep concentration and relaxation. The frequency following effect can generally achieve these altered states of consciousness in under 10 minutes although the effects can be increased if exposed to the audio frequency longer.

The use of binaural beats in auditory tapes is innovative yet the use of binaural beats themselves is nothing new. In fact, binaural beats have been used very early in human history by primitive tribes. Research conducted by Melinda Maxfield PhD has shown that drumbeats found in rituals of many cultures that beat at a steady rate of 4.5 beats-per-second induce a trance-like state in listeners. In hearing these drum beats the brain undergoes a frequency following effect whereby brainwaves shift to a 4.5 beat-per-second pattern thus inducing a low Theta brainwave state. Repetitive beats and chanting have been used by Native American shamans, Hindu healers, Tibetan monks, Sufi dervishes and practiced Yogis to achieve brainwave states for healing and higher levels of consciousness.

The phenomena of frequency following and binaural beats has been used throughout history to achieve altered states of consciousness and the art will no doubt continue to be perfected as technology and psychological knowledge advances. Now with the availability of auditory stimulation via tapes, CDs and MP3s it is possible to bypass years of mental training with just a few minutes a day when desiring control over the mind and body.
