Self-confidence is defined as an ability to believe in oneself and one's own skills and capabilities. This quality is an integral part of high self-esteem, and required for life achievement. A significant number of people who develop a social phobia or cannot learn how to improve self confidence struggle to succeed. The absence of self-confidence can be destructive to a person's success. The lack of a positive self-perception sometimes prevents a person in the quest to take control over past battles and making actual progress toward directing one's own future.
Unlike persons with a negative self-image, self-confident persons trust in themselves and their faculties to achieve their desires. Such people focus on achievement; able to learn through mistakes made previously, and can use those mistakes to their advantage. These individuals realize that weaknesses do not make them failures. On the contrary, they simply learned to evaluate the cause of failing and avoid succumbing to the same situations. Self-confident people are aware of, foresee possible impediments to their aspirations, and tackle these issues with the confidence that they have the ability to overcome these anticipated problems.
Many considerations can result in an individual's poor self-esteem. Often, people allow fear to become an obstacle, preventing them from achieving success in some area. Occasionally, some individuals can be deterred by genuine or believed guilt over previous mistakes. On occasion, a social phobia can undermine a person's self-confidence.
A second source of low self-confidence is naïve aspirations. Possibly an individual wishes to succeed at something in a given time period. That wish might or might not be practical. Additionally, successfully meeting a goal may in some cases take longer than originally planned. Requiring a longer time to accomplish an undertaking or having to overcome further obstacles to fulfill one's aspirations is not an indication of failure, although it may sometimes be considered as such.
At times, people who do not understand how to gain self confidence look for ways to boost self confidence. Often they expect therapists to assist them to build self confidence and settle these issues. A number of counseling theories center on building self confidence. One instance of this is cognitive behavioral theory, which instructs people to boost self confidence through goal setting for improving self confidence, such as shaking hands firmly. Moreover, they measure an individual's achievements by the accomplishment of simpler and then more complex tasks. Concentrating on these tasks does help persons acquire behaviors linked with self-confidence; however, it does not change their self-perceptions or permit them to resolve the difficulties that caused the low self-esteem.
Positive self-talk is an alternative way to building self confidence. A common topic in psychology classes is the self-fulfilling prophecy. This theory contends that clients are most apt to achieve only those goals that they perceive themselves to be able to achieve. Therefore, if individuals perceive themselves capable of failure or minimal accomplishment, this is exactly what they will do. Alternatively, if individuals perceive themselves to be high achievers who can succeed, they will achieve their aspirations. Counselors who utilize positive self-talk focus on encouraging individuals build self confidence, and aid them to value themselves as efficacious people who can pursue their desires effectively.
Hypnotherapy is another treatment for building self-confidence. Through building confidence hypnosis, persons can achieve a meditative condition alone or with a therapist present. They listen to positive words and concepts that help them to experience stronger feelings of self-confidence by receiving strong behavioral suggestions. This approach is very effective for people who are not logical or critical thinkers. For those people who are, however, this method of boosting self confidence is much less effective.
A more recent alternative procedure that therapists can use to develop self confidence is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). This revolutionary approach can actually utilize self-perceptions that have contributed to the client's negative self-perception to generate thoughts that will help to develop self confidence!
NLP modalities can assist a person to relate prior experiences of success to the current situation. Through the technique of anchoring, persons can be assisted to identify memories of positive self confidence in the past, and anchor those instances. On those occasions that client needs to gain self confidence again, he or she just triggers that anchor to draw from the strength of prior experiences to trust in and look forward to the success of the current endeavor.
NLP is uniquely easy and yet powerfully efficacious. Unlike other therapies, it eradicates the need for one to painfully analyze past difficulties or protracted counseling appointments to work effectively. NLP alone works for nearly each client who approaches it appropriately. A sizable majority of people who try NLP gain self confidence almost immediately after initiating the therapy.
