Being able bodied is something we take for granted, to be able to do everyday tasks without thought is a commodity that we rarely stop to think about until such a time as we are not able to do things ourselves. We are happy to think that only when old age starts to set in that we will need the assistance of mobility equipment or disability aids, but for many that is not to be the case.
Old age, whilst being one of the major contributing factors, is just one of the issues which can make little jobs become almost insurmountable, whether they be in the home or getting out and about, But for many, illness or injury can change the way you live your life dramatically. Anyone who has suffered from a broken limb at any stage in their life for example, knows just how much a disability can affect everyday living. Bathing and dressing becomes fiddly and time consuming, getting out and about with a broken leg is not essentially as easy as you would expect, the use of a wheelchair or crutches maybe required? This is a prime example of using Mobility Equipment.
Illness can cause disability, Multiple Sclerosis, Meningitis, Stroke; there are many reasons why a person could require help. Arthritis for example is an ailment that affects not only old people; it can affect all ages and in many cases can be debilitating. Arthritis causes stiffness, swelling and pain in the joints affecting grip or movement depending on the area affected, this in turn effects the ability to cope with simple tasks such as opening a jam jar, turning on a tap, filling a kettle, or perhaps getting into a bath? All of these tasks are only simple if you are able to do them.
Bariatrics is another area where specialised products maybe required, Bariatrics is the area of medicine which covers the research, cause and treatment of obesity which can be closely linked to illness or injury. For those who suffer from obesity life can be difficult, depending on the scale of the problem everyday items such as chairs and beds may need reinforcing to be able to cope with the added stress. In severe cases, not just with obesity but old age and disability too, the need for hoists and lifting aids may be required; these are mainly used by carers transferring patients from beds to chairs, wheelchairs to toilets, or for bathing requirements etc.
For people who are confined to a bed or chair the issue of pressure care has to taken into consideration, spending countless hours in one position without being able to move puts immense stress and pressure on the skin, causing sore patches, or bed sores as they are more commonly known. There are so many pressure relieving products on the market to aid this problem, cushions for chairs and wheelchairs, gel pads for toilet seats and commodes, supports for limbs which are specifically affected, right through to mattresses and beds which change the point of pressure by rippling or changing position, as well as absorbing core pressure.
With so many factors which can lead to disability or the loss of mobility, the need for additional help both inside and outside the home becomes more apparent. Disability aids are available for a variety of tasks which occur in every room in the house, kitchen and dining aids, dressing and comfort products, bathing, toileting, bed and chair aids as well as mobility equipment such as mobility scooters, walking frames, wheelchairs and stairlifts which enable people with disabilities to be self sufficient and independent whilst remaining in their own homes.
There are so many Disability Aids available on the market today, which make life just that little bit easier, knowing where to buy these products or seeking advice about installation or use of products has not always so simple though. These products once upon a time were hard to get hold of only being available via chemists and shops that specialised in Mobility or Disability equipment. Nowadays the internet has become one of the most efficient and easy ways to find, and shop for home health products, mobility equipment and daily living aids without leaving the comfort of your own home, many sites provide advice and information as well as a free delivery of your purchases direct to your door.
