This is a profiling of acne and focuses predominantly on acne medications with an insight to the management protocols!
The present day acne is a completely curable disease condition regardless of severity and cause! The disease is curable subject to a protocol of limitations:
- The cure and resolution of Acne is gradual and could well extend over a period of time - there are no 'instant fixes'.
- There are no universal treatments - the modalities of management are diverse and could well vary from one individual to the next.
- Professional intervention would invariably be mandatory - utilizing dermatologist intervention in most cases.
Perfect Solutions
There are scarcely any perfect solutions in the realm of acne management and there could well be instances where the acne medication would need to be adjusted from one case to another.
Concurrently neither is there any instant cures - for acne can scarcely clear overnight - the average duration of treatment could well range from six to eight weeks depending on the severity of the acne and the duration of treatment adopted.
Universality of Management
The modality of treatment which is the perfect fit could well vary depending on the severity of acne, lesion profile and the skin type - there being no universal modality!
Professional Intervention
Professional intervention is critical for the modalities of acne medications are numerous and the etiology and trigger factors need to be elicited for optimal and effective management - be it the age or the motivation of the patient.
The options are diverse and could well range from a combination of multiple therapies as a single prescription or in some instances there could well be one modality in the morning and another in the night.
Inarguably the cardinal rule being that the earlier that acne is treated the quicker and more effective are the results.
Options
The options are diverse and the dermatologist would well use personal discretion while creating a treatment plan:
- Physical Methods
The preferred and first line of acne medication being the physical methods like extraction of comedo
- Prescription Medications
- Topical Skin Applications
Topical Skin Applications such as antimicrobials are the preferred modality and are predominantly topical skin applications which are applied directly and locally to the skin.
The antimicrobials are known to work on the concept of destroying and eliminating microorganisms
Topical Retinoid
This is primarily a derivative of Vitamin A are a natural or synthetically generated substance
Oral Contraceptives
Hormonal imbalances are known to be the cause of acne in some instances and the mechanics of action being that the hormonal imbalances are corrected
It could well be taken as a cardinal rule that the dosing of acne medication is critical - considering that using a dosage level higher than advocated could well translate into aggravation of symptoms and may well prove detrimental to the course of treatment.
Aftermath
The prompt and effective management of acne is critical considering that delayed acne medication could well translate into formation of acne scars which may well be resistant to treatment, needing aggressive treatment of the likes of laser resurfacing.

Help for horror-story spa visit!
By: MoneyPenny | 19-11-2007
About a month ago I got a "facial" from a local spa and was surprised at the outcome. The woman was very rough on my skin, I think I had an allergic reaction to the cremes (or whatever she used) on my skin and the "extracting" device was the worst experience I have EVER HAD in my lifetime. My face is still red, it is completely broken out and it feels itchy and "sore underneath". I have no medical to go to a Dermotologist but know that this is serious...this is the first time I have ever had such terrible skin in my life and need some help...quickly! I have used Aloe Vera to sooth the skin, benzoyl perioxide (which hurts)to clear the pimples, a clay mask, and a heated soothing mask...nothing works. Can you please suggest something. I have gone crazy looking at my skin and am saddened because it is very damaged, I think.
How can I treat dry skin and scabs on my scalp?
By: Jackyp | 19-11-2007
Ever since the weather began to get colder my skin has gotten very dry and I have developed some dry scabs on my scalp that get itchy and cause dandruff. This has never happened to me in the past and I am not sure what to do. I tried conditioning my scalp with oil but it just made my hairline break out with acne. I know it must have something to do with the weather but should I be worried that it is something more serious? Are there any possible treatments that I should look into?

I’m waiting in a conference room that smells like the corner of career aspiration and stale office carpet. Like an annoying hiccup, she keeps repeating “Good morning, Hudson. Your name? Hold please.” Over and over again. She is an extra large version of what the rest of the world has automated already.
