Litoria moorei Motorbike frog
The Forest Heritage Centre in Dwellingup is situated amongst the South West Australia Forest and the the Motorbike frog is our one of our local Australian frog species. This large species of tree frog grows to a length of about 8 centimetres and its population is widespread from Kalbarri north of Perth, to Esperance in the southwest of Western Australia.
We offer guided tours at the Forest Heritage Centre, Dwellingup, and part of the tour is to educate people on the wide variety of Flora and Fauna. The Motorbike frog's habitat is usually near a permanent water source and the frog can be spotted in our suburban backyards.
Mating season is in spring into summer and thats when you can hear their unique mating call, described as sounding like a motorbike changing gears.
While mating the male frog attaches itself to the back of the female and pseudocopulates, which means the female frog produces eggs outside her body and the male fertilises them with his sperm, this process is called amplexus.
The tadpoles of the Motorbike Frog are large and their colour usually is dark brown to black. In Western Australia it is not uncommon, that children catch these tadpoles and rear them into adult frogs.
Although the tadpoles diet is mainly algae they grow up into carnivorous frogs, eating insects, small water species and even smaller frogs.
