Let’s build a web presence…no I don’t mean the proverbial fly in the spider web but your name and your writing in a place where it can get maximum exposure with a potential to attract people to your portfolio of work. I guess it is kind of like a spider attracting a fly…
They had a segment on the news the other day of a British TV show called “Britain’s Got Talent,” something similar to American Idol. A lady named Susan Boyle sang on this show last week and the response was unprecedented. The last count I heard was eleven million hits on You Tube. Talk about creating a web presence!
Unless you have plans to be on TV anytime in the near future, let’s start creating a web presence the old fashioned way, working at it. Today, just for the fun of it, I typed my name in Google to see what kind of web presence I have. Looking at the first five pages under my name, which is directing you to fifty different sites, my name and work comes up ten times. One fifth of the sites are mine! This is not an accident but it has taken careful planning and hard work to build a web presence.
What are some ways to get your name and work out there?
(1) Social networking- My face book and My Space pages both came up when I googled my name. You might think social networking is just for fun but in a short time I had over fifty friends on both, all who will have access to reading what I write on these sites and links to my other sites.
(2) My personal website-My website about writing came up twice on the second page showing the power of having your own website. A smaller website I also run came up on page seven.
(3) Articles-The articles that I write for different article websites came up six times in those first five pages, with a variety of subjects to attract publishers, readers and agents.
(4) Writing job-My being a contributing writer for an online ladies magazine also came up though I have only contributed three articles so far.
The most exciting thing that came from my search was seeing my articles picked up by other websites; one on the art of writing and one on the ways of God. Further searching found another website that picked up an article and several more links showing my articles directing people to article websites.
You might wonder how it all works? I’m not totally sure but after putting out over 80 articles on the web, the hard work is paying off. I have the two websites, two social networks and two blogs that I try and keep updated. Writing for five different article websites has expanded my reach into the cyber world. Two of the articles picked up came from ArticleBase.com and the online magazine that I am now writing for saw an article at this website also. Seeing my article is what prompted them to invite me to join their writing team!
My web logs did not come up but I know they are being read from comments I have received and that is what counts…building up a readership that will be interested in whatever you write and want to purchase your writings…Next time we will talk about the art of writing…
