Most everyone knows the aggravation that ringworm can cause. The redness and the itching can simply drive you nuts! Not to mention the potential embarrassment. But, did you also know that you can get scalp ringworm? The medical term for this is Tinea Capatis, and it can be a real pain if you get it. So, what is scalp ringworm, and what causes it?

Scalp ringworm is caused by an infection. It can be from poor hygiene, which is the most common cause, or from sweating and not washing later, and also from an injury or cut on the head. If left untreated, the infection causes the fungus to grow into full-blown ringworm.

While almost always found in children, scalp ringworm can also strike adults as well. You will know if you have scalp ringworm by its tell-tale signs of redness and itching. At this point you may also start experiencing hair loss as well. And, you may begin to notice bald patches forming on your scalp.

If you do start to notice a redness appearing on your scalp, or begin to scratch your head a lot, go to your doctor as soon as possible. Only a qualified health care professional can perform a diagnosis to determine if you have scalp ringworm or not. They can also get you started on the proper course of treatment.

Treatment of scalp ringworm will generally start with anti-fungal medication of some sort. There are several different kinds available. The medication will treat and kill the fungus in the area of scalp ringworm. You'll also need to begin washing your hair with a medicated shampoo. This is critically important. The area that is infected must be kept clean in order for the ringworm to begin healing.

Selsun Blue is an excellent hair shampoo to use. There are some other ones on the market as well. By taking some time and reading the label for ingredients, you can find what you're looking for. The active ingredient in treating scalp ringworm is selenium sulfide. The key in treating ringworm is to keep your hair clean. Washing it daily is a must if you want to eliminate scalp ringworm.

Keep in mind that scalp ringworm is very contagious. Do not share combs, brushes, or towels with anyone. Ringworm can easily be passed on this way.

The good news to scalp ringworm is that it is treatable and curable. By using the proper medication and keeping your hair clean, scalp ringworm can be eliminated within a couple of weeks.
