In this age of commercialization of almost anything and everything it might be easy to think that a skin tag is some kind of a commercial ploy to gain a bit of mileage. But that is not the case. A skin tag is not a tag on the skin. They are simply growths, spots on the skin that seems to increase with age, starting from middle age. Skin is the biggest organ we have and skin tags can appear anywhere and everywhere. And that is why a surprisingly large section of the population has been seen to have skin tags. But interestingly, this disease affects women the most, and women tend to care more about their skin than their male compatriots.

As discussed above, skin tags are small spots or growths on the skin that can appear almost anywhere on the skin. While that is correct, but even then, the tags are mostly to be seen in the groin regions, chest, armpits, the neck area, face and even on the eyelids. Skin tags are also referred to as fibroepithelial polyps, pedunculated papillomas and acrochordons. But most people would still refer to the growths as skin tags.

Since they are small growths on the skin, technically it can be said that they are actually tumors. But this fact doesn't make them dangerous. On the contrary, they are actually quite harmless. Medically skin tags are also malignant in nature and that can be quite a relief too.

To begin with, they just look like small and harmless bumps. Then they grow a bit more and assume the brown color. The surface of the skin tags look fleshy and smooth. However the appearance can differ from a person to another. While in some the tags are smooth, in others they look irregular and are deeply pigmented as well. But in all, the skin tags tend to hang on to the skin. The size can also differ but mostly they are between 1 mm and 5 cm.

Interestingly, pregnant ladies tend to get skin tags but it goes with time. But no one is quite sure yet on why this actually happens. In fact, there is a lot of doubt on why and how the skin tags happen in the first place, and that is not simply restricted to pregnant women. Research is going on in the subject and hopefully there will be better understanding some day soon.

Also, the disease in hereditary in nature. So if the father or the uncle or someone in the family tree had the tags, it is more likely that the present generation too might be affected by skin tags.

Though quite harmless in nature, but skin tags can be more than a bother still. Jewelry and clothing can cause itch and thus irritate quite a bit. Plus the skin tags can also be a social embarrassment of sorts.
