Popularly also referred to as pimples, Acne Vulgaris or simply acne is so common that sometimes people tend to forget that this is after all a disease. This happens so often to particularly teenagers that sometimes it is taken for granted that when in the teens, acne will be a normal feature. But it is not only the teenagers who are affected by acne. According to studies, as many as 50% adult women are also affected by this disease.

There are many misconceptions about this disease. There are those who are definite that acne is caused when someone does not applying soap in the face properly and regularly, working out too much, acute stress, wrong diet, exposure to dirt over long hours, and even masturbation. Well, the fact is, this couldn't be further from the truth. Acne is not caused from any of these.

Basically there are 3 causes of acne and they are:

An increase in the production of oil in the body, irritated hair follicles in the skin leading to coming off of the dead skin cells, and a buildup of bacteria in the body.

Acne happens the most in the teens, and since this is the time when the maximum growth happens and the human body goes through major changes, there is a lot of hormonal activity going on in the inside. It is suspected that this hormonal change is a prime cause of acne. When the human body produces excess oil and dead skin cells, these two combine in the hair follicles and become solid to form the pimples or acne. The pores in the skin can also get blocked due to excessive excretion and this can be another cause of acne. Prescribed medications can also lead to an increase in the production of hormones, and this can lead to acne as well.

Here are some other causes of acne

Menstrual cycles and puberty
Allergies and other skin irritations.
Excessive steroid use.
Prolonged skin exposure to greasy and oily substances.
Medicines having halogens have also been known to cause acne.
Contact with materials containing chlorine may lead to acute acne conditions.

Apart from this, there is another cause. Though it cannot cause the disease directly, but this can definitely spread the disease. And that is scratching the pimples. When someone scratches the pimples (mainly in the face), it has been seen that it tends to become worse. One picked pimple can lead to another, and then a third, and very soon the entire face may be covered by these red and ugly inflammations. True, acne causes acne to spread.

So though they may be itchy, but it is best to leave the pimples alone and let them heal properly. Remember, picking can lead to ugly scars on the face. Instead, try to address the main causes of acne, so that the pimples can be a thing of the past soon.
