There has been a debate for years whether dandruff is a skin disorder or a legitimate illness. At some point in their lives, three quarters of the population of the United States has suffered from it.

Dandruff can afflict anyone at anytime. Old or young, it is indiscriminate. Although it usually develops in people between the ages of 12 years old all the way up to 80 years old, newborn babies can develop dandruff too. In newborns and babies it is called cradle cap.

Dandruff is that disgusting dead skin flakes that come from the scalp. It can be a mild case or so severe that you decide never to wear dark colored clothes again.

While there is no cure for dandruff, there are a number of different treatments available that range in price from just a few dollars up to hundreds of dollars.

The least expensive treatment is to buy a dandruff shampoo. There have been a lot of improvements to them over the years. There are several different types that you can try; all have the same active ingredients.

If the product you pick does not work for you after washing your hair a few times, then try a new product. Chances are that there is one that is right for you. It is necessary to use the dandruff shampoo continuously or the dandruff will reappear.

For very stubborn dandruff, it may be necessary to seek out the advice of a dermatologist. There are several prescription creams and shampoos the dermatologist may be able to prescribe for you.

When first consulting a dermatologist, a complete health history and also a dietary history will be taken in order to make a proper diagnosis. It is possible for dandruff to occur when you have a diet that is high in carbohydrates and fat.

There are alternative treatments as well. Some people have found that herbal remedies work well for them. Garlic tablets that are found in health and nutrition stores have worked for some people and also Oregano capsules. While there is no scientific data to confirm this, there are some people that believe it works.

There are some really bizarre treatments, also. People have actually had wonderful results in eliminating dandruff by rubbing their scalps with raw onions. It is believed that the sulfur in the onion eliminates the dandruff. If you do not want to rub your head with onions, use sulfur based shampoo.

Dandruff is an embarrassing scalp condition, but it is controllable. There are products on the market and by prescription that can assist anyone who is seeking treatment. Whether it is a traditional dandruff treatment or unconventional, there is a treatment for everyone.

How can I treat dry skin and scabs on my scalp?
By: Jackyp | 19-11-2007
Ever since the weather began to get colder my skin has gotten very dry and I have developed some dry scabs on my scalp that get itchy and cause dandruff. This has never happened to me in the past and I am not sure what to do. I tried conditioning my scalp with oil but it just made my hairline break out with acne. I know it must have something to do with the weather but should I be worried that it is something more serious? Are there any possible treatments that I should look into?
