Excessive sweating is known in the medical community as hyperhidrosis. The clinical definition describes hyperhidrosis as a condition in which the body sweats more then it actually needs. The condition appears genetic and has a hereditary factor associated with it. Medical sciences current understanding of excessive sweating point to it being an issue within a portion of the nervous system.
Most sufferers of the condition experience symptoms primarily in their hands and feet, but since we can sweat in so many areas of our body many other areas can be affected as well.
There are a couple different treatment options available to people suffering with excessive sweat problems. Some options currently used are botox injections, various prescription medications as well as some herbal and alternative therapies and lastly there is a surgical procedure.
The long term effectiveness of many of these solutions can vary from individual to individual. It is definitely worth keeping your options open and trying some of the simpler and non evasive remedies before deciding on wether surgery or botox is right for you.
There are oral medications you can take as a treatment option, but they seem to have a limited success rate and do have some side effects such as blurry vision and dry mouth. The way in which many of these drug work is by blocking the brains nuero transmitters that are responsible for telling your body when to sweat.
Botox is used primarily for people with excessive under arm sweat. It is used to block your bodies chemical transmitter that also triggers sweating. Botox injections are not permanent and if used it is something you will have to get done about every 3 to 6 months.
The surgical procedure is known as sympathectomy. It is a permanent and long term solution for many. However it is a surgical procedure and is done under general anesthesia. The procedure it self is fairly safe but there are some known side effects. One that just about every one who has the surgery done is called compensatory sweating. Compensatory sweating is when your body sweats more in one area of your body due to the lack of sweating in another area.
There are other side effects and if you are considering surgery you should ask your doctor for more details on what can happen.
As for alternative therapies and herbal treatments there is some success found in these remedies for many people, but not everyone. It is an avenue worth exploring since it is many times a much safer and simpler option which may provide you with the cure you where looking for.
