7 Ways to Make your Fundraising Letter Effective

Fundraising letters are so much more than just a simple request for a donation. These letters really are a great sales letter with a great sales pitch that hooks the reader and has them opening their wallets and donating before they set the letter down. A quality well written fundraising letter can be the key to any successful fundraising campaign.

An effective fundraising letter will catch the reader’s attention, convince them to donate and cause them to tell their friends about your cause. Writing a great fundraising letter is easy when you follow these seven simple tips.

1. Identify your reader. By knowing who your letter will go to you will be able to tailor your letter to that particular group of readers.
2. Keep it brief. People are busy and fundraising letters can easily end up in the junk mail pile if not short and to the point.
3. Make the letter personal yet professional. You want to give the reader confidence in your organization yet help them to feel somehow connected on a personal level.
4. Keep the news happy. You want readers to know all the good things your group is doing then let them know the reason for your fundraising letter.
5. What, Why and How. Now is the time to include the details of what you plan to do, why you plan to do it and how you plan to do it.
6. Suggest a donation amount. By giving the reader and option they are more likely to give that amount and maybe a bit more.
7. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Always remember to be grateful and thank your donors, for without the givers the project may never happen.
