THE TRUTH ABOUT CEREAL
Cereal has turned into the “21st century breakfast” and today, most adults have been eating this fast, easy to make breakfast for the greater part of their lives.
Cereal can be classified into two types: Children’s cereal, which generally comes in bright colors, is extremely sweet and is mostly made form white flour, corn or rice. And adult’s cereal, which is somewhat healthier, a bit more natural and is generally made from wheat flour, oat or rice.
The truth about cereal, regardless of whether it comes in a box decorated with dinosaurs or a box that shows a young, slender woman, is that is has very little nutritional value.
Cereal is a trap in which many of us have bought into because the commercials on TV make us believe that it’s a great breakfast for kids, that it can help you lose weight and that it’s good for lowering your cholesterol and improving your digestion.
The reality is that cereal is basically flour and sugar and that it’s not only very high in carbs, but also very low in protein: the opposite of a healthy breakfast.
Losing weight with cereal is next to impossible because one bowl has around 35 grams of carbs which is what a woman trying to lose weight should eat in an entire day. And improving your digestion with cereal is even harder than losing weight because the milk you use to eat it with causes indigestion, not to mention that most cereals don’t have enough fiber to compensate for the amount of flour they have.
Most cereals sold at your local grocery store are just as high in sugar and carbs as Ice cream or even cake, only they’re more expensive. The only cereals that are truly nutritious and balanced are raw cereals such as oatmeal and Muesli, which is a mix of different raw grains. But even so, Muesli only counts as a nutritious breakfast when it has no sugar and has fruits as well as seeds and nuts to add protein.
