Next time you decide to sweeten up that cup of coffee, think again before you reach for the packet of sweetener. They come in familiar light pink, blue and yellow packages but do you really know what’s in them?
We all know what sugar is, but when we go for something else, there is a whole mystery of chemical combinations hidden by familiar names developed by marketers.
Sure, we all have heard of Nutrasweet, Sweet N’ Low and Splenda, but do you know exactly what they are? Do you even know anybody who could tell you what they are? Artificial sweeteners have been around for decades, but most people are still in the dark about what they are really made of, or where they come from.
For example, did you know that almost all of the most popular artificial sweeteners were discovered by accident? And did you know that one of the most famous and often-used artificial sweeteners was created more than 130 years ago?
You also probably didn’t know that some artificial sweeteners are as many as 600 times sweeter than real sugar. It may be a surprise to learn that a lot of the foods you eat have more than one kind of artificial sweetener in them in order to have a taste closer to that of real sugar.
If you’d like to know more about these mysterious packets that are in every coffee shop and on the table in every 24-hour diner, keep reading here.
