The prudence that mankind has pursued to mimic what nature has long bestowed on us is long fore-sought and continues to be in future.
Once a herbal potion is discovered for its remedy of a certain ailment, it encouraged scientists to isolate and synthetically prepare in large scale the active principle(s)
Some of these herbal potions are actual plant parts used either raw or else treated in a certain manner, the isolates of which are used instead.
Some of the common herbs are used in or daily spicy ingredients of our food. Examples are many, some of which we describe herewith.
The Shallot disambiguation, (Alliaceae) is a close relative of the onion. It has a taste of mild sweet onions .onion with mild flavor. Shallots are extensively cultivated and much used in cookery, in addition to being pickled. Finely sliced deep-fried shallots are used as a condiment in Asian cuisine. Raw Shallot is widely used in the southern part of India. extensively in snacks, salads, curries and rice varieties.
Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae. Coriander seems to have been cultivated in Greece, BC.Also known in the Middles Eastern, Central Asian, Indian and other south eastern countries. All parts of the plant are edible, but the fresh leaves and the dried seeds are commonly used in cooking. Coriander has been used as a folk medicine for the relief of anxiety and insomnia in Iranian folk medicine. Coriander seeds are used in traditional Indian medicine as a diuretic by boiling equal amounts of coriander seeds and cumin seeds, then cooling and consuming the resulting liquid. Coriander juice (mixed with turmeric powder or mint juice) is used as a treatment for acne, applied to the face in the manner of toner...
Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) is originally cultivated in Iran and Mediterranean region, it is also known in ancient Greece and Rome. Cumin seeds are used as a spice for their distinctive aroma, popular in south eastern Asian, North African, Middle Eastern, Sri Lankan, Cuban, Northern Mexican cuisines, and the Western Chinese. Either ground or as whole seeds, is traditionally added to chili, curries, and other Middle-Eastern, Indian, Cuban and Tex-Mex foods. Cumin has also been used on meat in addition to other common seasonings. Its main constituent and important aroma compound is cuminaldehyde (4-isopropylbenzaldehyde).
Examples of other herbs used for remedies of different ailments are many. We can sit here but a few, egg:
Scoparia dulcis is a perennial herb widely distributed in many tropical countries. It is used as a remedy for gastrointestinal and many other ailments, and in Nicaragua extracts, used to treat malaria. Phytochemical screening has shown that scopadulcic acid A (SDA), scopadulcic acid B (SDB), and semisynthetic analogs are pharmacologically active compounds from S. dulcis. It has antiviral activity against Herpes simplex virus type 1, antitumor activity in various human cell lines, and direct inhibitory activity against porcine gastric H+, K+-ATPase.
Salvia plebeia R. Br., Ocimum gratissimum L., and Ocimum basilicum L. (Labiatae) are used in a Taiwan remedy named "Chhit-Chan-Than", believed to possess anti-inflammatory and detoxication activities. It has also been used in the treatment of hepatitis.
Extracts of Toddalia asiatica, a plant used by the Pokot tribe of Kenya to treat fevers contains the alkaloid nitidine as the major antimalarial component. Fractions containing in vitro 50% inhibitory concentrations are active against Plasmodium falciparum in the range of 9 to 108 ng/mL for a range of chloroquine-susceptible and -resistant strains.
