If you are asking "how do I get our of a weight loss plateau?" there are more than one answer. The reason is that there can be more than one reason why you have reached a weight loss plateau. In this article I am going to discuss problem no. 1 and the solution to it. It may be a good idea to read this article even before you reach a plateau to prevent it.
1. Problem no. 1 – too few calories:
When you are trying to lose weight, it is necessary to reduce your calorie intake. Unfortunately exactly that can be the reason why you have reached a weight loss plateau.
Our bodies do not like loosing weight and is programmed to try and keep your weight steady or to even increase your weight. So, in response to you eating fewer calories a day, your body slows down your metabolism and you need fewer calories a day to keep your body functioning.
Another problem is that even though your body needs fewer calories to function properly, you still get hungry as your body is trying to encourage you to eat more. This again can make you stop losing weight.
2. OK, so now you sit with this problem:
- If you want to lose weight, you have to cut down on your calorie intake per day
- In response to the fewer calories you are eating a day your body has slowed down your metabolism.
3. Solution to problem no. 1 – you have to eat a little more:
Yes, you have read that right. You have to convince your body there is not a famine on the way so there is no need to conserve energy for vital bodily functions. It is true that this may even cause you to gain a little weight at first, but if you keep your calorie intake at no more than 500 to 700 hundred calories below your daily needs, the weight loss will start again.
4. There is a formula that you can use to find out how many calories you need per day:
i) Women:
Body weight in pounds divided by 2.2 X 23 will give you the amount of calories your body needs to maintain your present weight. So if you weigh say, 176 pounds you will need 80 X 23 = 1840 calories (kilo calories, but everyone simply calls it calories) to maintain your present weight. If you want to lose weight and prevent yourself from reaching a plateau, you should eat about 1340 calories a day.
ii) Men:
Body weight in pounds divided by 2.2 X 24 will give you the amount of calories your body needs to maintain its present weight. So if you weigh say, 209 pounds you will need 95 X 24 = 2280 calories (kilocalories, but everyone simply says calories) per day to maintain your present weight. So, if you want to lose weight without reaching a plateau, you need to eat about 1780 calories a day.
4. Wow! This sounds complicated
