Coffee is one of the world’s most commonly consumed drinks. Millions of adults in the United States seek their morning java to help get a start to their day, and most all of them drink more than just one cup throughout the day. There are people who swear by it, and say that they just can’t get up and get going without their coffee, and other simply love it’s rich, simplistic taste. For years, however, coffee was thought of as a sort of vice – there were no studied health benefits, but it was suspected that such a highly concentrated source of caffeine may not be good for you. New information, however, is giving coffee lovers even more of a reason to reach for the mug in the mornings. Recent studies that have been conducted on coffee have started to seriously change the way nutritionists look at coffee.
One thing that has been known for a while is that coffee is a plentiful source of antioxidants. Antioxidants have taken the nutritional world by storm, and are credited with all sorts of amazing benefits in the human body. They block damaging free radicals, which cause decreased energy levels, premature aging, and certain forms of cancer. These benefits are known and understood, but perhaps the most exciting thing about antioxidants is that they seem to have many other benefits that are not yet understood. One of these benefits is that certain intakes of caffeine seem to help reduce a person’s chance of developing diabetes. It is known that caffeine makes the body more sensitive to insulin, but exactly how it protects from diabetes is not completely clear. Studies have been conclusive, however, that those who drink coffee regularly are less likely to develop diabetes.
For a long time the biggest threat to coffee’s reputation was its high amounts of caffeine. Caffeine wasn’t completely understood, and relatively few tests had been performed with conclusive results on how it actually affected the body. As scientists tested coffee, they were also forced to test the effects of caffeine. Not fitting with its reputation, caffeine was found to have numerous benefits, with the largest actually coming in the form of an athletic aid. Caffeine has been shown to have similar fatigue-busting, stamina-boosting to athletic enhancers on the market, except that it boosts the performance of the body in all areas – not simply specific ones. Those subjects who drank a cup or two of coffee regularly performed better in athletic tests, and were able to sustain energy levels for longer periods of time. It seems that caffeine emits special signals to the body, telling it to ignore the usual effects of mild fatigue. This helps energy to keep up longer and improve stamina. Most surprising, however, was that a startling revelation in relation to Parkinson’s disease was discovered. Several tests performed provided the same result – people who regularly consumed coffee had a severely lowered risk of developing the disease. Some people were up to 80% less likely than those who don’t drink coffee.
The views of coffee are rapidly changing in the health community. Once feared for its lack of detailed research and high levels of caffeine, people are now starting to look at coffee as a mild form of health drink. One thing everyone knows is that it’s a definite boost in the morning, and man people just can’t seem to get along without it. This is exactly why these reports are so astounding and important – coffee is used so regularly by so many people that its effects on the body need to be understood as much as possible. So far scientists are very intrigued by these findings, and optimistic of more to come.
