The Discovery of Acai Berry

If you are hearing about the acai berry for the first time, you aren't alone. In fact, most people are just now learning about the existence of this exotic fruit, even though it has around for hundreds of years. If you want to learn a little more about this fruit, and what benefits it provides, continue reading.

The acai berry is a small fruit that grows on the tops of the acai palm tree in the Amazon rain forests. The berries tend to grow in clusters on the tree and are usually harvested by climbing to the top and cutting them down. The berry itself is only about an inch in length and looks much like a typical blueberry. Unlike a blueberry, however, the acai berry contains a large, inedible seed in the middle of it. The seed is usually removed after harvesting and used for jewelry.

For many years, natives and the tribes who lived around the acai berry have used it as a source of food in their daily life. Ofteintimes it would make up to 40% on their diet. While they didn't have the scientific research we do now, what they did notice was that they stayed healthy longer and had more energy throughout the day.

Unfortunately, the acai berry could not be transported to other countries and regions without spoiling quickly. In recent years, freeze drying techniques have allowed it to be preserved during transportation so it may be exported. This is the reason why most people are just now discovering the acai berry.

When scientists and researchers took a closer look at the acai berry, what they found was impressive. It contained one of the largest quantities of antioxidants found in any fruit or vegetable. These antioxidants, if you don't already know, help our bodies fight off dangerous free radicals. Free radicals are known to attack healthy cells, cause malignant cell changes, and are even believed to speed up the effects of aging.

Of course there are more benefits to the acai berry other than its powerful antioxidant qualities. It also contains the healthy, fatty acids known as omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. These are beneficial to your heart and help control cholesterol levels. This is just another benefit of the acai berry fruit.

Of course some other nutrients we shouldn't overlook are its many vitamins, such as vitamin C, D, and E. Plus fiber, which helps aid in digestion, and a healthy serving of protein.

Not only is the fruit beneficial to the human body, but it also taste great. The flavor is that of a mix of chocolate and sweet berries. This incredible flavor is used in smoothies, ice creams, juices, and other dishes to give them the acai taste.

The acai berry is a fruit that has fed and helped keep us healthy for hundreds of years. And now that more and more people are realizing the benefits to this fruit, there is a good chance that we will only be hearing more about this superfood.
