There has been a lot of controversy lately regarding the numerous unnatural ingredients and resources used in the production of our food. Many people are skeptical and even scared when they hear that their meal has any association with pesticides, antibiotics, and growth hormones. As a consequence, many people have turned to organic food. Organics are in general better for you because they are produced without the use of most conventional pesticides, such as: synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge fertilizers, bioengineering, and radiation. Furthermore, organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics and growth hormones. So why aren’t more people turning towards this healthier way of eating?
Well one reason behind their hesitation is the cost. Organic food can cost 50 to 100 percent more than similar brands of conventionally grown food. So if you want to eat healthier, you should expect to be spending almost twice as much on your weekly food budget. Another problem which arises with organic food is the question of authenticity. Most organic foods have a USDA seal which means that a certified member inspected the farm. All foods with this seal have to be at least 95 percent organic. However, when you go to your local greenery, you may find that not all foods have this seal. In that case you simply have to take their word for it. Something else to pay close attention to when purchasing these products is the location of the item’s production. Some of these foods are grown in China and very little is known about their rule enforcement. So try to purchase products that were grown in the United States. This way you can avoid worrying about the authenticity of the item. Also, next time you are shopping for a healthier meal at your local trusted greenery, remember to look for the USDA organic seal of approval.
