Have you ever heard the saying ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’? Most of us have encountered that particular saying at one time or another. But do we truly know what that particular limerick insinuates? Most of us are unaware of the many health benefits that our bodies gain from consuming fruit.
One area of our bodies where consumption of fruit plays a major role is in our digestive tract. Many fruit act as natural laxatives and they help our bodies during the digestive process. Fruit is known to provide roughage and fiber which is vital in aiding our bodies in getting rid of waste.
Protection from illnesses is yet another benefit we gain from consuming fruit. Fresh fruit contains certain vitamins which your body needs to remain healthy. All citrus fruit, such as oranges, grapefruits, and tangerines, contain an abundance of vitamin C. A lot of other fruit contain a wide range of vitamins, such as A, C, and E. All of these vitamins are important anti-oxidants which shield your body from any damage that might be caused by free radicals.
Fruit can also protect your body from cancer-causing free radicals and it may slow down some of the effects of aging. Who does not want to slow down the effects of aging? I think that everyone would eat fruit if it would help them look younger. Well, the pigmentation in certain fruit may aid in slowing down the aging process. The blue in blueberries and the red in cranberries are extremely rich in antioxidants. These antioxidants protect our bodies from free radicals and aid in slowing down the aging process.
So the next time you hesitate about picking up that apple or orange, think about all of the health benefits that you are turning away from your body.
