Environmental Regulations Across the Globe Mandates Lower Sulfur Content in Distillates
Increasingly stringent environmental regulations across the globe have been mandating low sulfur content in fuels. Increasing demand of ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and ultra low sulfur gasoline (ULSG) requires major investment in the hydrotreating units. To produce ULSD or ULSG, refineries require both distillate hydrotreating and feed hydrotreating. The feed to units like fluid catalytic cracking or reformer also requires additional hydrotreating units.
North America Has Higher Desulfurization to Distillation Ratio
Despite accounting for only 22% of global refinery distillation capacity, North America has higher percentage share for desulfurization units. In 2008, gas oil desulfurization capacity in North America was 36% of global gas oil desulfurization capacity while naphtha desulfurization capacity in North America accounted for 40% of the global capacity.
Gas Oil and Naphtha Desulfurization Capacity in North America is Increasing But A a Slower Rate
The North American gas oil desulfurization capacity increased from 2,834.8 thousand barrels/day in 2000 to 3,821.6 thousand barrels/day in 2008 at an AAGR of 3.7% and it is expected to increase to 3,979.0 thousand barrels/day in 2013 at an AAGR of only 0.8%. Similarly, Naphtha desulfurization capacity increased from 4,341.8 thousand barrels/day in 2000 to 4,598.3 thousand barrels/day in 2008 at an AAGR of 0.7% and is expected to increase further to 4,637.9 thousand barrels/day in 2013 at an AAGR of only 0.2%.
