Internet Marketing and Hispanics

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were about 43.7 million U.S. Hispanics aged 2+ as of 2008.  In May 2009 comScore reported that about 21 million of them were online, representing about 10.7% of all US persons online.  And the U.S. online Hispanic population is growing about three times as fast as the overall online population.

Without question, U.S. Hispanics have become very important among internet marketers, as well as the direct selling and network marketing industry not only because of their sheer size, but also because they will grow to 105 million by the year 2050. As this generally younger audience makes brand decisions, U.S. Hispanics represent an opportunity for many online marketers to grow their business among a relatively underserved market, which is more open to product suggestions.

Also, a recently released report from research firm Horowitz Associates reveals that Hispanic households in the biggest U.S. markets under-index when it comes to Internet and broadband services.

Among the other main findings are:

  • Since 2006, broadband penetration has grown by 82 percent in Spanish-dominant homes and 89 percent in bilingual homes. By comparison, there has been 36 percent growth in English-preferred Hispanic homes – mainly due to early adoption of the technology.
  • Aside from using e-mail, Spanish-dominant Latinos use the Internet mostly for instant messaging, phone calls to international locales and for listening to music or online radio stations. They also over-index on searching for random information.
  • In terms of content, Spanish-dominant Hispanics – more than any other group – seek out sites with news, weather, politics and current events. They also frequent websites with medical and health information and enjoy uploading videos to user-generated sites.
  • Additionally, 61 percent of Spanish-dominant Hispanics 18 years of age and older visit a Hispanic website or a Spanish-language site on a weekly basis. That compares to 47 percent for bilingual Hispanics and 18 percent for English-oriented Hispanics.

In a recent report from Pew Hispanic Center, U.S. Hispanics accounted for more than 50% of the U.S. population growth since 2000. An eMarketer report showed the Hispanic audience is more open than other groups to brand suggestions and advertising messages.

This represents a tremendous opportunity for any marketers (including the network marketing and direct selling industry) in an unstable economy.

The complexity of reaching this audience can intimidate many marketers, as the potential for making mistakes is high. Fortunately, new online targeting technologies have ushered in a new chapter: marketers can now grow awareness and sales among U.S. Hispanics, overcome the challenges and create effective marketing campaigns that segment their target audiences correctly with measurable results.
