Most Effective Search Engine Marketing – KeyWords
I’m going to be writing many articles regarding the most effective search engine marketing techniques and I thought I would start with the basics such as keywords. I have spent a good few years working with local businesses and their websites and every week I’m amazed at the basic mistakes they make. Most think that they can hire someone to build them a website and then by magic they will get a large stream of traffic and orders. How wrong they are.
Firstly I would say that most web designers do not really deal with SEM etc. They are simply going to design you a good website and it is then up to you to hire a SEM expert. It can take weeks or even months of work to get your site ranking highly in Google, it does not happen overnight.
Using Decent Keywords
Many websites I look at are using main keywords that will never get traffic. For example lets say Sally Jones has a Florist shop in Derby. You will be amazed how many businesses like this will be using the main key words “Sally’s Flower Shop” or something like that. The website will rank well for these keywords, but the only people who are going to type these keywords into Google are people who already know about the shop. Let’s think about the services Sally offers then think about the keywords she should use.
Sally states her main services are, wedding flowers, funeral flowers and home delivery flowers. These are services she would like to generate orders for online. Let’s think now what potential customers in her area will be typing into Google to buy these services. Obviously they will be typing keywords such as,
Buy Derby Wedding Flowers
Buy Derby Funeral Flowers
Buy Flowers Derby
We would type the above phrases into the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and find phrases for the above that are getting traffic. Always try and go for keywords that people in the frame of mind for buying will be typing. Keywords that include, buy, get, purchase and order are ideal and will be targeting people ready to order.
The most effective search engine marketing methods are not highly secret techniques that are going to baffle you. They are simply the basics principles of SEM of which anybody can learn in a week or so through a good online course!
