Copyright law governs the world of reprint rights, resell rights, and private label rights products. This is by reason of the fact that a copyright attaches whenever a person creates an "original work." An original work can be a book, a video, an article, or software code (or more). Only the creator of the original work has the right to exploit the work. in this context, the term "exploit" usually means the right to sell.
The copyright holder also has the right to giveaway (or transfer) rights to the work. An exclusive transfer means that the person who receives the transfer is the only one who has received the transfer (thus the word exclusive). A nonexclusive transfer means that the copyright holder can grant the same transfer to as many other individuals as he or she chooses.
The transfer of rights is done by way of a license. The license will specify What the transferee can and cannot do with the work -- the product in question.
Typically, a resell license will allow the recipient to sell the product in its present form, without changes. The benefit to the recipient is that the recipient (the licensee) will be able to retain all the profits generated from any sales.
Typically a private label rights license will grant the recipient the right to make changes to the work. A private label right license is much broader than a resell right license. Many private label right licenses will grant the holder the right to change the content of the product to make it their own. Private label purchasers will go so far as to change the product name, the graphics, and the order in which information is provided. Any sales generated are kept by the license purchaser.
In general, a private label rights license is much more valuable than a resell rights license. Private label rights grant much more control to the licensee.
