Very few businesses handle all of their own graphic design work. Many companies these days hire outside people to take care of this. A practice like this comes with benefits and risk if you are not careful.
The benefits stem from the wider pool of people you now have to choose from in creating a strong marketing presence. Varying up your marketing and your images can be very important in staying fresh and new. If you are working with a wide variety of graphic designers you will have a better chance at getting something completely new and different to work with.
But this also means you are naturally going to have less control over the work because you are hiring outside help. A lot of marketing campaigns are planned out well in advance, and have multiple parties all working in unison.
If you already have your printing planned out and the designer suddenly tells you they need more time, or what they give you is not what you were hoping for, you might lose a lot of money pushing everything back. You might even be in a position where you just cannot push things back without losing your presence in the marketplace.
So what to do?
The first thing you have to do when looking to hire a graphic designer is ask to see what they have done before. Never work with someone without getting some kind of feel for what they are capable of doing. If you need brochures than ask for some brochure samples from them. Use this as your first glimpse into what you can expect when they design something for your company.
Now, if they do not have any brochure samples because they have never specifically worked with brochures before the decision is going to be yours whether or not you want to continue with them or not. I am not going to voice any strong convictions one way or another because the situation probably would not be very cut and dry.
Just because a person has never worked with one particular type of marketing before, that does not mean they cannot design it, and they might even do an amazing job. I would still suggest you look at other kind of marketing they have designed. Never hire them without having seen at least something from them.
Checking with previous people who worked with them is also going to be very important. Be sure you know if they have a habit of being late with their work, or if there are any other areas you might need to be concerned with.
I know it can seem like I am listing off all of these different problems to watch out for, and I know it might seem as if you should not really bother with the hassle, but that is rarely the case. Sure, there are risks, but if you make sure you have a good hiring process you can cut down on these by a lot.
