The spread is the difference between the two.   Since the bid is always lower than the ask, if you traded back and forth all day with no change in rates you would lose money with every trade.  However, rates never stay the same.  Fluctuations within the countries’ economies as well as the global market mean that the rates and spread are constantly changing. 
 
The adage of “buy low, sell high” applies to the Forex market. If you think that a certain currency will increase in value over another then you want to buy the strengthening currency with the intention of selling it back at the higher price.  If you feel a currency is weakening then you want to sell it before it loses any more value.
