Attending college is a given for many young students, especially those who will benefit from their parents hard work in the form of tuition, books and quite often, housing. For some high school graduates, however, the financial support system ends at their 18th birthday. For these young adults, the decision to attend college has little to do with desire and everything to do with their ability to pay for it.
Yes, there are student loans available to just about anyone, but borrowing for tuition, fees and books over a long term period can lead to serious financial consequences down the road and may not always be the best decision. Additionally, many potential students are only able to borrow enough to cover tuition and books, leaving them to worry about living expenses during the four year period they’ll be earning their degree. It’s extremely difficult to maintain any semblance of a life when you only have the scheduling capacity and credentials for a part time job that pays close to minimum wage.
In other words, the deck seems to be stacked against students who don’t have financial support from their family or whose families are simply unable to help when it comes to college. Still, the importance of sacrificing for education now at the expense of things that may seem more important to someone in their late teens or early twenties can’t be overstated.
At that time in a person’s life, things that are seemingly important rarely are, in actuality. Affording a better car, moving out of their parents home for increased independence or socializing are monumental concerns for many high school graduates, yet seeing how expensive it can be to enjoy those pursuits seldom forces them to draw the connection between increasing the value of one’s labor and affording those pursuits with far greater ease. Nevertheless, a little hard work now will pay great dividends in the following years while remaining stagnant will only produce more of the seeming hardships this demographic faces.
Some people have to learn things the hard way, and many will waste a lot of time doing so. Others view the academic system as a institutionalized method for establishing conformity that needs to be circumvented by any means possible. Most will eventually come around, and the sooner they do, the sooner they can begin to enjoy all that a college education can provide.
