Belmont Park Tips

Betting on horses is fun, and if you’re good at it, you can make money. If you plan to bet on horse at Belmont Park, you need sensible Belmont Park tips. The object of betting on horses is to beat the odds makers or odds compilers. If you do so, you will win some money. Betting on the event makes the race more exciting and more enjoyable. Typically, you can bet either at the track, or off track by calling a company who accepts bets, or even betting online at a website that accepts bets. The sports book, the company or person who books the bets, is not an odds maker, the sports book merely accept the bets. An odds maker sets the odds for the bet.

Belmont Park horse racing track, one of the most famous race tracks in the world, is located in Elmont, New York in Nassau County, Long Island. It is just outside of the New York City Borough of Queens. Its race track is a mile-and-a-half (2.4 km). Thus the main track is the largest dirt course in all of thoroughbred racing. This famous course first opened May 4, 1905. The most famous race at Belmont is the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown. Belmont is known as The Championship Track because just about every major champion in racing history since the early twentieth century has competed on the course, including every single one of the 11 Triple Crown winners.

The Belmont Stakes is named for financier and sportsman August Belmont, Sr., who helped fund the race. Most sources have it that the racetrack itself was also named for him, whereas some say Belmont Park was named in honor of his son August Belmont II, a key member of the organization that established the race track, the Westchester Racing Association.

The first Belmont Stakes was run in 1867 at Jerome Park Racetrack in the Bronx. In 1937, August Belmont II's sole surviving son, Perry Belmont, donated the wrought iron gates with an illustration of that first Belmont Stakes that are on the fourth floor of Belmont Park's clubhouse.

The famous Belmont Stakes races have been run at the famous Belmont Park race track since 1905, except for the years 1911-12, when racing was outlawed in New York State. Also, the 1963-67 editions were held at Aqueduct while the grandstands at Belmont Park were rebuilt.

Secretariat's finishing time of 2:24 in his 1973 Belmont Stakes victory set a world record for one and a half miles on dirt. That world record which still stands. The 31-length victory clinched the first Triple Crown in 25 years, dating back to Citation in 1948. A statue of Secretariat is in the center of the Belmont paddock. The "Woody's Corner" display in the first-floor clubhouse lobby honors another Belmont Stakes achievement, commemorating the five consecutive Belmont Stakes winners trained by the legendary Woody Stephens from 1982-86.

The racetrack was also the site of Affirmed's epic stretch duel with Alydar in the 1978 Belmont Stakes, a victory that gave Affirmed the Triple Crown. Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew defeated Affirmed in the Marlboro Cup in September of that same year. http://www.winningponies.com/biguns/Belmont-Park.html
