Online Gambling - In A Nutshell - Part Ii

One of the best ways a novice gambler can learn to play his or her games of interest is on the Internet. First of all there are numerous sites that offer the opportunity to play games for free online. Secondly, participating in these games allows a new player to learn without risking any money. Additionally, frequent play without the pressures of play for money games allows one to concentrate on how to play, and to eventually develop the skills and strategies necessary to win in games with money at stake.

One thing a novice on-line poker player should keep in mind when playing for free is that just as you can develop into a skilled player by learning to play poker without monetary pressures, so, too, can you develop bad habits by not caring how you play, because, there's no money involved. Worst of all, if you happen to get lucky and win some games playing against other novice poker players you may have gained a false confidence that will lead you into playing at cash games where you will come up against players with real skills, and the likelihood that you will lose money.

It pays to remember that in order to win serious money in poker you must develop skills, and there is no better place to hone those skills then at on-line poker. There is no better proof of this then the fact that the last two winners of the World Series of Poker learned to play and develop their skills on the Internet.

Bottom line: There are countless books available offering poker play strategies and online tutorials, that, in addition to practice play online, will develop a players all-round abilities.

In addition to the various forms of poker that can be played online; stud, hold ‘em, etc. there is video poker. Video poker differs from the other poker forms in that in traditional poker players compete against each other, and not the house. The house, whether an online casino or a brick and mortar establishment, makes its money from the "rake". The rake is a percentage charged by the house for hosting and supervising the games.

However, in video poker the player is competing against a computer, and not against other players. The brain of a video poker computer is called a "random number generator", which is a piece of technological hardware designed and set in the factory to generate poker hands randomly.

The rules of video poker are the same as they are in traditional poker, with the same hierarchy of hands:

- Royal Flush
- Straight Flush
- Four Of A Kind
- Full House
- Flush
- Straight
- Three Of A Kind
- Two Pair
- One Pair
- No Pair

Variations of video poker are once again the same as traditional poker; Deuces Wild, Joker's Wild, etc. Most all video poker games, however, are based on five card draw, with Jacks or Better the most popular variation. Simply stated, to win, you must have Jacks or Better.
