One of the things I teach people when they sign up for my "Secrets of the Sales Funnel" email course at http://www.thesalesfunnel.com was, simply enough, what a sales funnel is.
If you can imagine the inverted pyramid shape of a funnel then that's exactly how a sales funnel looks. Take a look at this diagram to see what I mean:
http://www.thesalesfunnel.com/sales_funnel.jpg
The purpose of a sales funnel is to first capture the attention of your prospects and secondly determine how much time and money they are willing to invest in your products.
To do this, you use a series of emails (which can be setup on auto pilot) to send them information relating to your products, offering entry level products (such as a $27 ebook or a "lite" version of your product) to see which prospects are willing to invest money to solve their problem.
By setting up a sales funnel, you essentially filter out people looking for "freebies", and eventually end up with a group of people that will basically buy anything and everything you put in front of them, regardless of price.
The general rule of a sales funnel goes something like this:
For every 100 people at the top of the sales funnel (slightly responsive, maybe freebie hunters), you will end up with 2 or 3 that make it all the way through your sales funnel, buying different products along the way.
They are known as your hyper responsive customers, and ideally they're the type of customer that every business wants, because:
- They trust you.
- They respect you.
- And most importantly, they buy from you. Over and over again.
