Social networking has become extremely popular, but discussion forums are not anything new. They have been around since the beginning of the Internet.
You can join a discussion forum for free and then take advantage of what they have to offer you. A discussion forum is a place where people gather to exchange ideas on a particular topic.
For example, if you have a website that is built around the theme of home improvements, you could Google search the words "home improvement discussion forums" and come up with different ones that you can hang out in.
Here is what we mean by hanging out in a discussion forum.
The first thing you do is register as a free member. You also want to take the time to correctly set up your profile and include a link to your website in it.
Many forums will let you to create a signature file, and this is where you will write a short classified ad about yourself or your business. Sometimes you may just hyperlink a keyword phrase and then include a sentence about it.
If you have any questions about how to do this just look at existing members and come up with ideas for your own.
To make discussion forums work for you there are two key things that need to happen.
1. You can become an avid reader of discussion forums and learn a tremendous amount of information for free. This is one of the biggest benefits for people who are not actively involved in the various discussions.
2. Another thing you can do is post questions and then read the replies and learn that way. You can also get involved in the discussion and as you began to post more your credibility will increase too.
From a business standpoint one big benefit of discussion forums is the traffic that it can drive to your website or blog. This is extremely targeted traffic and the people that are coming want to be there.
You can make sales from this traffic, increase subscribers to your newsletter, get subscribers to your RSS feed, increase repeat visitors back your website, create viral marketing for your products, and so on. There are many benefits that can happen from a quality discussion forum.
