Karen Grahams has keen interest in Internet Marketing, which began roughly four years ago. Writing has always been her passion. She is continually striving to enhance her interest by developing internet strategies.
Posters are a great way to capture people’s attention. That is, if they are big, bright and colorful, and have a great image or photo.
The nice thing about using posters is that in their essence they are just hard marketing to ignore. Think about it: you glance at a poster, even if you didn’t want to, and just that glance has told you what it’s about. Now, whether you actually read the smaller print is up to you, but it still got your attention before you even knew if you wanted to give it attention.
Make sense? Let’s compare posters to television commercials. At the end of a show, or when you can tell a show is ending a segment, you can get up and move out of the room. You didn’t even have to see the commercial to know you didn’t want to see it. But with a poster (billboards included because billboards are just a bunch of smaller posters glued together), by the time you see it and register what it’s about you’ve already consumed the message.
Also, you can use posters on the street. Other than people needing to use that street, you don’t have to motivate them much to look at your poster. With magazine ads, you have to rely on the magazine’s information to draw readers in to open the magazine and look at your ads.
Now that you know why you should use posters (they’re hard to ignore), here are some tips for using posters effectively to market your business.
Don’t try to compete with cluttered poster spaces. What I mean by this is not to take on spaces like college campus community boards where your poster will probably be covered by another by the next day. Unless your poster has very bright colors or dwarfs the others in size, this is almost a waste of your color printing money. Try to put your poster in places like grocery store bulletin boards and library bulletin boards – places where there’s a lot of foot traffic, but not a lot of people are advertising there. If you think you have a good shot of standing out in a cluttered environment, try hanging your poster at the very bottom or the very sides of the bulletin board. You’ll be less likely to be covered there.
Hang up posters where your target market will be. For instance, if you want to advertise a medicinal product, try hanging your poster in hospital waiting rooms or health-food stores. Hanging your posters in areas where people will be more likely to be interested in them will bring you a higher response rate.
Place them where people will be waiting. When people are bored, they’ll read anything! People are most often bored when they are waiting, so put your smaller posters on a doctor’s office bulletin board in the waiting room and place your bigger posters in bus stops, train stations and other places where people will be waiting.
Check out local laws. If you place your poster somewhere illegally, not only have you lost money because your poster will be ripped down, you might even have to pay a fine!
