Windows 7 is running slow - how to speed up your slow computer today

If you find windows 7 is running slow on you, crashing and not as fast as it was when it was new you may be wondering what has caused this. Windows 7 requires more resources than previous versions of windows and this means your computer should be optimized as much as possible for the best performance.

#1 Use startup manager to configure your programs. Many people have never heard of this but it can be found inside windows 7. To gain access to the startup manager do the following.

Go to the start icon on the windows taskbar, then to run and in the run box type in "msconfig" and when the box opens for this go to the startup tab. Once you get to the startup tab you need to disable any programs you do not need to run all the time. You can do this by unticking the boxes next to them. This process is completely safe and you can enable them again if you have made a mistake simple by restarting your PC and going through the same steps.

#2 Disable all the visual effects if you do not need them. To disable Aero or visual effects in windows 7 right click on the desktop. Next go to personalize and select a basic theme without memory intensive effects. If you are playing games such as WoW there can be a massive gain in performance just by disabling aero.

#3 One problem that slows windows 7 right down is antivirus software. Some types of antivirus software do not work very well with windows 7 and from the moment you switch on your computer consume increasing amounts of memory until your PC crawls along. The only way to speed it up is to restart your computer, until an hour or two later you are faced with the same problem again.

If you find your windows 7 computer running slow you can determine if this is the cause of the problem by doing the following.

Start task manager by pressing the CTRL-SHIFT-ESCAPE keys together. Next go to the processes tab. Once you have this open scroll across to where it says mem usage. This is the amount of memory each program is using.

You need to know the name of the process used by your antivirus software to determine this. If you do not know what it is called you can look it up in a search engine to find out. Once you know this you can use this information to determine how much memory it is using. If the amount is very large relative to o what other programs then you should consider using a different antivirus program.

#4 If after running through these steps you still find windows 7 running slow you can take further steps to fix this automatically. Simply download a system scanner and system optimizer and let it optimize your computer for you and save you the headache of trying to find out what else is causing your slow computer.

Uninstalling programs can lead to invalid entries. When a program is uninstalled, the entries that are in the registry should also be removed. This is not always the case. Most of the time, fragments of the application are left in the registry and windows can slow right down as it searches for them and leave you looking for a slow computer fix.
