Windows 7 laptop Running Slow - How To Fix Your Slow Laptop Quickly

If you have a slow windows 7 laptop there could be several reasons for this and before calling a technician out or taking your laptop for repair there are a few things you can do to address this.

Before you go and buy any software or starting deleting software off your computer or even buying upgrades there are a couple of simple steps you can carry out first.

#1 Check your power management settings.

This is the #1 reason for a slow laptop next to malware and corruption. If your power management settings are incorrect your laptop will crawl along.

Here is what to do in windows 7.

Go to control panel, then all control panel items, then power options. From there open the power options icon and click on select a power plan. If your laptop is running slow ensure it is not set to power saver. If it is click on the balanced dial and save your settings.

Depending on your laptop you may need to restart it to take effect. This is not because of windows but because of how the BIOS interacts with windows. After restarting check your computer performance by running a game or an application that usually runs slow.

If your laptop is still running slow go back to the power settings as detailed above. Instead of clicking on balanced click on more options and then select high performance. This option will is for maximum performance but your battery will run out much quicker.

If none of these options work and your windows 7 laptop is still running slow check the following.

Start task manager by right clicking on the task bar and then click on task manager from the menu. Go to the performance tab and look to where it says physical memory. Under this it will say total and available. If the available amount has fallen under 512000 (512MB) system performance will start to drop rapidly. Ideally it should 1GB.

If the available memory is low go to the processes tab and then scroll across to the right to see what is using the most memory under the "mem usage" tab and make a note of this.

The most likely causes are:

#1 Malware.

#2 Antivirus software. Some consume a lot of memory.

#3 A poor performing, corrupted or infected program that is leaking memory. This means even after you close it you will not get the memory back without restarting your computer. An indication of this is when your computer gets slower the longer you have it on for.

How do you know what the problem is?

There are two ways to ascertain this. You can note down the file name and then search on processlibrary.com to see what the file is. Then go to the manufacturers site and get an update for the software, driver or program. If it is not recognized it may be malware.

The automatic solution.

If you find your windows 7 laptop running slow after running the above steps or you have unrecognized files consuming lots of memory it may be spyware or malware or may be a corrupt file that is not recognized by the system. If this is the case the easiest way to determine where the problem is on your laptop is by running a system scanner. This will scan through all the drivers and files and the windows registry to determine where the problem lies and if it is malware or a file problem and will only take a few minutes to fix. Go through these steps one at a time to determine where the issue lies and then run a system scanner if your laptop is still running slow.
