Are you thinking of making the upgrade to Windows 7? Are you curious what you have in store for you when this operating system makes its big kickoff? Windows 7 comes to us just three short years after Windows Vista with some great new improvements and features hoping to trump what Vista had to offer (and without the bugs).
If you’re a Windows using trying to decide if you should make the upgrade or if you currently use another operating system but are thinking of making a switch, you need to know more about Windows 7 so you can tell if it is right for you.
It’s never possible to review something 100% when it’s still in its beta stage, since many things can change. However, this is what we think of Windows 7 so far.
Windows 7 is easy to install, turn on and turn off. It is designed to have a nice clean sheen and appeal to it like Windows is famous for with its operating systems. It is basically an improved and streamlined version of Microsoft Vista. It’s fast and lightweight and it performs well, with a special note to performance on laptops.
The UI has some new features such as Aero Peek, Aero Shake and Aero Snap. Aero Peek tries to solve the problem of juggling too many windows and programs at once. You can hover over the show desktop function and see all the open windows you have at the time in an outline. You can also hover over the fly-out thumbnails to see certain application groupings which are probably more helpful to someone who runs multiple programs and windows at once.
Aero Shake is an interesting feature that allows you to grab the title bar of a window and then shake it to minimize all of the other windows. This proves very useful when you’re changing tasks or if you are trying to clear clutter on your desktop without closing out programs or windows that you might still need.
Then there is Aero Snap which allows you to manage your windows with click and drag abilities. You can pull them to the top or bottom of the screen, fill half the screen by pulling it to the left or the right and more. You can manage your windows better than ever before with these great Aero features.
The Windows 7 Start menu allows searching and has been enhanced with a new upgraded layout and supplemental menus to help you find what you need quicker. There is also a new taskbar which has gotten a lot of attention for Windows 7. You can also find quick display switching with Windows + P. It’s never been so easy to switch between multiple monitors and displays.
There are many other things to consider about Windows 7 such as the application changes and omissions, security and networking features, the overall speed and stability, compatibility and even the different versions that will become available such as home premium, pro and ultimate. However, when it comes right down to it, the one thing that most home users and business professionals look to first when considering a new operating system is the UI and functionality of that system. On this front, Windows 7 has got it all.
