IN THE NAME OF DEFENCE
Every country spends enormous amount of money in the name of defence.
Countries have borders to separate one from another.
Friendship between countries can bring down the defence expenditure.
Little conflicts leads to enmity, so countries try to defend with army, air force and navy.
The modern equipments needed for defending each country costs huge sums of money.
Whether the country is rich or poor, developed or under developed defence becomes a necessity.
In democratic countries, there are defence ministers and in others there are military rulers keeping the armies in their peck and call.
The defence force eats away a part of the national budget every year.
Defence is a necessary evil to protect the borders of our country.
In the name of defence, each country is building up mass destructive weapons, thinking they will be useful in case the other country attack.
If there is peace, no country attack, then all these weapons becomes outdated and useless.
Then the countries buy new weapons, aircrafts, warships etc.,
Some countries make nuclear bombs and rockets to deliver them in far off countries.
The reason for all these activities is fear.
One is afraid of the other.
Although, there are many memorandum of understanding, border disputes, ideological differences, dividing forces that divide nations.
Defence forces are trained for discipline, fighting and protecting the borders of a nation.
They are well maintained providing all sorts of necessities for their family.
Liquor selling canteens, army hospitals, schools, housing, retirement benefits etc., are facilities provided to them.
Defence forces are sent to peace keeping mission United Nations.
Army officers happily retire when peace prevails; whereas at times of war, they have huge responsibilities.
War torn countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, Sri Lanka and some African countries consume large quantities of defence weapons which are bought paying huge amount of money.
When unlimited quantity of money is involved, it becomes easy for squandering.
Such cases have come out at many instances.
For example, Bofors gun purchase scandal, recent allegation of Tony Blair’s involvement in corruption in weapon purchase and many more.
Some are known and many are unknown.
Secrecy in defence is maintained and so in money matters.
In the name of defence, we lose the national wealth but at the same time we need this establishment to safeguard our country.
In a disciplined defence service we expect decency and decorum.
Selling and purchase of defence equipment, involve trade secrets and commission.
Lobbying to buy a particular brand involves bribing to fix a customer.
Therefore, it is easier to get trapped in this business of weapon purchase.
There are standard methods to follow to buy any equipment.
But still there are loopholes which have to be plugged for a better operation.
Ex-service men tell us about the different kinds of atrocities happening in the defence services.
But such things happen every where, when human beings are involved.
Defence services should take care to defend themselves against all these odds and provide the people loyal service and get good name and fame.
