Health and Care looks at the potential injuries facing skiers this winter

As the dark nights set in the ski season comes to life across the world with skiers of all ages brushing up on their skills and trying to get fit in the gym in time to take to the slopes. But with all the thrill and excitement that skiing brings it is an unfortunate reality that some very serious injuries can be sustained.

The most common injury that a skier faces is an injury to the knee and it is generally to the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) which is a ligament located inside the knee. The ACL is the major ligament connecting the femur and the tibia and is one of the key parts of the knee joint for maintaining stability and flexibility.

As an injury to the ACL is most commonly caused by a traumatic force to the knee causing a twisting motion and hyperextension, it is not difficult to see how this injury is frequent among skiers. Skiers are most likely to suffer this kind of injury when they are landing jumps, skiing moguls or twisting during falls.

An ACL tear will normally require a long recovery period that may possibly combine surgery or the requirement to wear a specialised brace. There are braces that are specifically designed for ACL injuries and help to protect the ACL ligament and hyperextension. The Donjoy Armor Professional Knee Brace with Fourcepoint is one of the best braces available for skiers and can also be used as a prophylactic brace. Not only does the Donjoy Armor Knee Brace with Fourcepoint provide stability for the knee, the Fourcepoint technology offers a resistance to alert the wearer if their knee is about to hyperextend. The Donjoy Amror Professional Knee Brace with Fourcepoint is available to purchase from Health and Care.

For female skiers hitting the slopes this winter they may find the Donjoy Female Fource Knee Brace a more suitable ski brace. Like the Donjoy Armor with Fource Point Knee Brace, the Female Force helps to protect the knee from injury to the ACL and also provides the resistance to alert the skier to when their knee is about to hyperextend. The Female Fource ski brace is specifically designed to shape to the female knee and is also lighter in weight making it ideal for the slighter female build. The Female Fource Knee Brace is also available to purchase from Health and Care.

Health and Care sell a range of ski braces for a number of different knee injuries. The Donjoy 4Titude Knee Brace is ideal for moderate to severe injuries to the ACL, PCL (posterior cruciate ligament), MCL (medial collateral ligament) and to the LCL (lateral collateral ligament). Other braces available from Health and Care that are ideal for skiers are:

  • Donjoy Drytex Playmaker Knee Brace
  •  Donjoy Osteoarthritis Adjuster Knee Brace
  •  Donoy Trupull Advanced Knee Support
  • Donjoy Drytex Wraparound Playmaker Knee Support

It is well worth having a look at the range of ski braces if you suffer from any kind of knee injury. Donjoy are world leaders in brace technology and the strength and design of the braces have made many skier’s lives much easier. The Donjoy braces also enable skiers who have suffered an ACL or similar injury that would normally have prevented them from skiing to actually take to the slopes and ski as normal.
