If you think that the art of Cornhole Corn Bag tossing isn't complicated, think again. There are 2 basic corn bag tossing techniques, and a professional Cornholer such as myself, will use both techniques over the course of their career. How do you go about deciding which technique to use? At the risk of ruining my standing in the Pro Cornholer community, I will divulge the secret to you. Just remember never to tell anyone where you got this closely guarded information from.
The two Corn Bag tossing techniques are The Lob and The Fastball (or Fastbag). The Lob is simply a softer toss with a high arc. The benefit of this technique is greater control of the final resting place of the bag. The Fastbag is a harder toss with almost no arc in the trajectory. While you lose some control of the final resting place of the bag with the Fastbag technique, there is a good chance you will get a bounce or two and the bag will end up on the cornhole platform, even if you are off your game a little and the first bounce is on the ground. If you are having a bad night, the net result will be 1 point for the Fastbag, and zero points for corn bags surrounding the platform if you are using The Lob.
The biggest consideration for your choice of techniques is the location of your game. Is it outside? Is it windy? Your lob won't work as well if this is the case. Are you playing people with physics degrees? Uh oh. These folks will use all kinds of calculations using mass, distance and wind speed, and sooner or later they will be hitting the mark almost every time. If this is the case, you should use the fast bag technique, and hope that you get a slew of bags on the platform. Those 1 pointers can add up!
There is one more advantage to using the Fastbag technique, and it's a biggie. If you are behind in the game, a well aimed Fastbag to your opponents head might just shake them up a little. Just make sure to say "oops" afterward. Unfortunately, The Lob doesn't have the same effect, and your opponent will usually have time to get out of the way.
Now you know why I am not a professional Horseshoes player.
The bottom line is this: If you want to become a well respected cornholer, you have to learn and use both corn bag tossing techniques.
