This is a problem that many parents are facing today which causes them a lot of pain and misery. It is consoling to note that as parents they can resort to a lot of things to address and overcome this kind of problem. One of the most fundamental things to do is to ensure that you can recognize the condition for you to be able to act readily to the situation.
Recognizing teenage depression can be very difficult indeed. It is not easy to distinguish between actual teenage depression from the general problems of adolescents in this confusing stage of their lives because it is during this stage that teenagers develop changes physically and emotionally. It can be confusing to tell which is normal and what a cause for alarm is. Nevertheless, you should have regular contact with your teens and you can monitor their actions and feelings at different situations. A good relationship with your teens can help a lot to help them deal with their feelings and emotions.
There are warning signs which indicate that your teen is or may be depressed. Poor school performance evidenced by low grades could be one indicator. You may see your teen start to stay away from friends, family and social or community activities. They may refuse to engage in a favorite sport and spend more time isolated in their room. They may appear to be in deep sorrow and lack motivation and enthusiasm. Your teen may express hopelessness, anger or even rage. Inability to concentrate and forgetfulness may occur. Self-esteem may drop at an all time low. Though they may become somewhat isolated, they may also be restless and agitated. There may be evidence of substance abuse or suicidal ideation.
As a parent you should never fail to respect the thoughts and feelings of your teen. Do not dismiss their feelings. Make them feel that they are loved by the family, and that they are important to them. Do not hesitate to get professional help if necessary, and remember that you should always be safe than sorry. Some of the symptoms above can be an indication of a medical or psychological problem that your teen is facing, or even a combination of the two.
Teenage depression is a serious issue that needs to be treated as soon as it is detected. Teens, no matter how independent they might seem, will still depend on you in times of need. So make sure that you respond to it well, so as to help your teen overcome teenage depression effectively.
