Dealing with Bedtime Temper Tantrums? Don’t Do This!

You know the story. The long day. You are tired, your child is tired, and guess what? It is bedtime. What that means in your life is it is time to deal with a toddler or even preschool child throwing a tantrum about bedtime. Are you dealing with bedtime temper tantrums? Is still there are so many things that you can do. But there are also so many things you can do wrong.

Do Not Forget the Goal
Your goal as a parent is to teach your child how to have a good bedtime routine. Okay, your ultimate goal is to raise your child is healthy happy polite kind and gentle. But, right now your goal is to get them to go to bed without throwing a temper tantrum. When it becomes about you versus them you’ve lost focus on your goal. Before you make any decisions as to how you’re going to deal with the temper tantrum you need to keep the goal in mind.

Do Not Start with Punishment
When you’re first method is to punish your child at the end of an already very long day you are asking for tantrums. When you’re exhausted and someone tells you to do something you don’t want to do, don’t you want to throw a tantrum? Of course you do! stole your child. Do not start by punishing them. You need to try and distract or change their behavior.

Do Not Forget That You Are the Parent
Too often parents forget who was in charge. This does not mean that you need to lord over your authority. What you need to do is remember that as the parent, as the adult, the expectation is that you will be more reasonable and understanding of your child’s state of mind. If they are throwing a tantrum, because they’re overwhelmed, find a way to calm them down. If they’re throwing a tantrum because they feel they have control, take back the control and set reasonable limits. Never forget who was the adult.

Hang In There
I know that bedtime temper tantrums can be a killer. I have four children and have lost too many nights of sleep dealing with temper tantrums. I know what not to do because I’ve done them and they don’t work. At the same time I have found what does work. So I have some good news and bad news for you.
